— Two artists from the Dirt Palace feminist arts collaborative in Olneyville say they hope to complete renovations at the Wedding Cake House at 514 Broadway within 18 months. At a meeting Tuesday night with the West Broadway Neighborhood Association’s Community Development Committee, Xander Marro and Pippi Zornoza said mechanical work, including plumbing and electrical improvements, is already under way at the historic home, formally known as the Kendrick-Prentice-Tirocchi House. “The artists plan to transform this important property into an artist-in-residence hub as well as a bed and breakfast for arts/culture tourists and researchers,” the neighborhood association said. Of the eight guest rooms, at least two will be set aside for artists and the remaining rooms will be used as short-term rentals to provide cash flow to support the operation. Marro said the mix of artist residences and rental rooms will probably be flexible. Marro said the group has $250,000 of the $800,000 that will be needed for renovations and repairs. Little will be done to alter the design of the 1867 mansion, but a handicapped-accessible entrance and bathroom will be added. A later addition at the back of the house, a one-story space built as a doctor’s office, will be removed to provide room for six off-street parking spaces. Marro said this change was recommended by Clark Schoettle of the Providence Revolving Fund, who has led efforts to preserve the mansion for years. The house’s most notable occupants were the Tirocchi sisters, women who ran a fashion business there from 1915 to 1947. According to the Guide to Providence Architecture, the Tirocchi sisters “lived here for much of the 20th Century and played an important — but until the early 21st Century, not well-understood — role in Providence’s emergence as a fashion-design center.” The mansion was on the Providence Preservation Society’s Most Endangered Properties list in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016.
